Eating locally is when you choose to buy produce which has been grown and harvested close by, and has not travelled far to get to you. There is no agreed-upon distance for the threshold in which food is ‘made locally’, and it tends to vary person to person, making it a little hard to properly quantify.
Of course, it is sometimes a privelege to purchase locally grown produce from farmers over a megacorporation, as it can be more expensive. However, if you are able to, there are numerous benefits to buying locally made produce, which we will discuss in this article.
In almost every case, produce that has been grown locally is of a higher quality and tends to be more fresh. The produce will not have been coated with chemicals to survive long journies, and will not have been left on a shelf for long periods of time. Usually, local produce has been harvested within the last 24 hours, ready for the farmers’ market, so it is at its peak freshness for your enjoyment.
As well as freshness, locally grown produce is considered to be healthier for you. When fruit and vegetables are ripe, they have the highest possible amount of nutrients, then they diminish over time when they become overripe. Farmers will be selling produce at the height of their ripeness, so they are incredibly good for your body. Usually, supermarkets and large companies focus on shelf life over nutritional value, and the produce will have been stored for a while before it even makes it onto shelves, so their nutrional value tends to be lower.
Tasting good is great, but there also larger benefits if you zoom out a bit. When produce is imported from elsewhere, several methods of transport (e.g. trucks, planes, boats) will be used, which increases the carbon emissions going into the atmosphere. So, when you get food that is not imported from elsewhere, you are reducing your carbon footprint. Imagine the difference if we all chose local produce where we could!
In the future, I truly hope you will consider buying produce from your local farmers, it really helps us out, and in exchange, we give you the highest quality products we can!
